The Defords, Katie Cothern's adoptive parents, disapproved of A.B. Burt, but Katie loved him. Throwing caution to the wind, they eloped, fording the river on horseback to get to Tecumseh, in Pottawatomie County, OK. Oklahoma. Barely sixteen, Katie lied about her age, and they were married in May, 1898. AB and Katie soon moved into a half dugout, in Linden (Pottawatomie County OK). There was bad blood for some time between the Defords and the newly united Burts. Katie insisted on full approval and respect for A.B.Burt. Then, and for the rest of their lives.

| This is one of my favorite photos. For a closer look, click on the photo. It is very large and will take some time to load. The man on the left is unidentified. The woman seated on the left is Katie Burt, and standing behind her is Asbury. The woman seated with the baby is Rosa Burt, and the man with the book next to her is Allen Burt. This photo was probably taken soon after their marriage in May, 1898. |
Katie and A.B. had six children:

Asbury Burt was a sharecropper. After marrying Katie in 1898, they lived in Linden, (Pottawatomie County), OK until 1904 at which time they moved to Little, in Seminole County, OK. Things were changing in Oklahoma. Statehood was on it's way. The motor car was replacing the horse-carts. The mule-teams would eventually be losing popularity to the motorized tractor for plowing. Industry was upon the face of Oklahoma, and the nation. 1919 brought the Burts to Shawnee, although some records say 1922. They soon had their own family business. Working very hard, like the rest of America, they attained at least moderate success.
The kids grew up.
Their oldest son, Claude called "Buddy" had a disagreement with his parents and left home at 16. Katie used to say she prayed every day, and that his angel protected him. Claude was in WW1, and WW2 as well.

Lily married Hank, and Joe married Jewel. Someone was always living with Katie and A.B. Aunt Molly, A.B's sister-in-law, lived with them until her death, and I think Aunt Puss (Eliza), A.B.'s oldest sister did too. I found a receipt for her funeral expenses billed to them.

Shawnee/or Burt Mattress Factory
Around 1919 - 1922 A. B. and Katie moved to Shawnee in Pottawatomie County, from Little, Seminole County, Oklahoma. Eventually they owned and operated Shawnee Mattress Factory. Grandmother made ticking. They lived at 727 Hobson, the Mattress Factory was located at 423 South Beard Street. The old place they lived, and the mattress factory are long gone. I don't remember Grandma and Grandpa living anywhere but in the town of Shawnee. They moved to 611 W. Tenth long before I was born.
