The children of Alfred and Lucinda Franklin Burt

Alfred Burt left Cumberland County, North Carolina in 1825, as an infant, with his father Willis, and mother Rebecca Womack Burt. They traveled to Franklin County, Tennessee with his father's brother, Fredrick, and Fredrick's young family. There he remained until the early 1870's.
Lucinda Franklin lived in Bedford County, Tennessee with her father,  believed to be Peter, her mother Rachel, and her sister, Indianna, as well as other siblings. Her father died before 1840.
Alfred and Lucinda Burt were married December 22, 1848 in Franklin County, TN.
They were the parents of 12 children. One child, believed Idella, died as an infant, and a son, Albert, died around the age of 8. Many of those children are listed here.

Eliza Burt Howell

Eliza Mary Burt was the oldest child of Alfred and Lucinda, born 1850 in Franklin County, TN. She married James D. Howell. She left Tennessee with her parents family and emigrated along with a number of others to Denton County, Texas. When her parents moved to Oklahoma, it is believed she and her husband followed, and lived in the Pottawatomie County for the rest of their lives. They are both buried in Little, Oklahoma. They did not have any children. Eliza and James D. were called "Puss" and "Dud".

Sarah L. Burt Howell

An old Texas newspaper clipping, undated but must have been about 1941, had a photo, not reproduced because of the poor qualityand said:

An undated clipping, but written in ink beside it "1947" said:

"Aged Resident of Vernon Dies"
Funeral Services for Mrs. Sarah Howell Will Be Conducted Thursday. Mrs. Sarah Howell, 94, who had lived through four wars, died early Wednesday at the home of a daughter, Mrs D.P. Bodiford, 1403 Lexington. She was born Nov. 4, 1853 at Murphesboro Tenn, and was married Jan. 8, 1871 at Pilot Point Texas. She came to Texas at the age of 16 and moved to Willbarger County in 1920. She was a member of the Church of Christ of Vernon.

"Here Are Five Generations"

"Five generations recently gathered at Millsap. Seated on right in the picture is Mrs J.F. Howell, 88, of Millsap who moved to Parker County in 1877. She left Tennessee for Texas in 1869. Seated on left, her daughter, Mrs. Ida M. Dennis, Millsap. Standing left, her granddaughter, Mrs Knox Thompson of Love County, Oklahoma; standing right, her great-granddaughter, Mrs. Maxine Golden, Seattle, and seated center, her great-great-grandson, Jimmy Don Golden."

Rachael Rebecca Burt Tankersley

Born December 29, 1864, in Tullahoma, or thereabouts, TN., Rachael Rebecca Burt was named for both her grandmothers. I have copies of a number of letters written by Aunt Rachael to Alfred and Lucinda, but they are in such a poor quality that they are not really readable.

Wesley Judson Burt

John Wesley Judson Burt was born in Memphis, TN Aug. 4, 1867. He grew to be six feet tall, and had black hair, his average weight was 160 to 80 lbs. He wore a mustache most of his adult life. He had a good sense of humor and was a very reliable person.
Some years later he and his family moved to Denton, Texas where he met and married Sarah Louisa Walden in October, 1893. One child, Myrtle was born to them in Texas. They moved to Oklahoma, which was then "Indian Territory". Three sons were born to them. (1) Alton Leroy who died at the age of six months, (2) Edgar Franklin, (3) Albert Marvin. Also born to them were six girls Velma, Loris, Verna, Mable, Pauline and Vay.
They first settled at Pink, OK. then moved to Little, OK where he served as Justice of the Peace for several years. He also worked as a clerk in a General Store. Also did a little farming.
He and his family then moved to Keokuk Falls, OK where again served as Justice of the Peace for several years. He also raised alfalfa and cotton. With the help of his family and hired help he made as much as fifty-six bales of cotton in 1 year.
Then, he & his family moved to Cromwell, OK where he owned and operated a grocery store and meat market. Cromwell was then a booming town. After having lived there a few years he and his family moved to Shawnee, OK where he again owned and operated a grocery store and meat market until he retired in 1936. He and his wife lived in Shawnee until his death April 3, 1942 at the age of seventy - four of a cerebral hemorrhage.

Bell Burt Grisham

Bell Burt was Alfred and Lucinda's youngest daughter. Twenty years younger than the oldest. She was born in 1870 in Decherd, Tennessee and died around 1906 in Ranger, Eastland County. Texas. One of my favorite findings about Aunt Bell was the letter below, written to her parents. It was written a beautiful longhand script. and the wording gives some insight into her personality, or at least to the times. I have not added or changed anything in the transcription.

A note was added by Flora Tankersley Stacy, who was in possession of this letter. It said " Note by Flora Tankersley Stacy My Aunt Bell died about 1906 when I was 6(?) years old. Mama went by train to visit her and when she left, taking my small brother Alvin with her I remember crying so much that Papa went and bought me a little red wagon."
