3 LEWALLEN,Frank and Fanny Lowe came to Western Kansas after their marriage to take a homestead about fifteen miles southwest of Russell Springs, Kansas near Lone Butte. Their closest neighbors were the John Nolind family. While living there to prove up on their land, Mary, Mable, Mattie and Albert were born. The times were very hard and they had to depend on getting wild game for meat.
At that time Winona was known as Gopher and a box car served as a depot. Later they returned to Wabaunsee County and settled at Dwight, Kansas on a farm. Rose was born while living there. Later they moved over to Chalk Mound, Kansas where Fannie was born. Their neighbors were the Spragues, Ludlows and Neffs. They farmed and raised cattle. In 1904, they decided to return to Western Kansas. Ludlows came with them and they traveled by covered wagons, bringing their cattle with them. It took weeks to make the trip. When they arrived they lived on a rented farm three miles west of Winona, known as the Patton land. Later they moved to the Thompson place, in the fall of 1910, which was four miles of northwest of Winona and lived there untill 1930.
In 1914 and 1915, Frank and Fanny operated the Winona Hotel located at the north end of mainstreet. The CK&O railroad branch ran from Scott City to Winona at that time and during harvest as high as one hundred harvest hands would come up on the train and would have to be fed. These meals were served family style and cost twenty five cents. The "drummers" had their own table and their meals were fifty cents. This hotel burned in 1932. In 1926, they operated the hotel at the south end of mainstreet. Mrs. Mary Dutton (Floyd Dutton's mother) assisted with running it while visiting here.
The Frank Lowe family went to Denver, Colorado by covered wagon in the early part of their marriage to work at laying the rails for street cars. Up to that time the cars were pulled by horses. M.G. Lowes went to Denver with them. There were no sidewalks in Denver at that time, and the Capitol building was in the process of being built. Frank and Fanny had many and varied experiences during their lifetime.
In later years they joined the Pilgrim Holiness Church and became devout Christians.
