James Wilkerson b 1786 VA

To put things in perspective, James Wilkerson (I'll call Sr. for identification) was born 1786, in VA. before George Washington was elected president of the United States. Records are sketchy, and it looks like the name may have been "Wilkinson" in generations prior to our James b 1786.  James' migration looks like he left VA for KY, as he owned property in KY. Then he went to Franklin County, IL. From there he went to Crawford County MO, where the last record is found for him on the 1850 census. There are other Wilkersons along the way, who do or "probably" have a connection. He was a widower sometime after 1832, and remarried before 1848. Somewhere from this line is said to be our Indian connection.

There are many theories about the Wilkerson's Indian heritage. We have yet to find our connection. However, numerous relatives, close cousins as well as those I hadn't even met until the internet - maintain they were told of this . The older ones of my generation told me Zachariah (grandson to James Sr) was "full blood" Cherokee. Grandmother, Lucy Wilkerson Lowe (ggdaughter to James Sr.) used to say they could have had head rights, but Ida (Zachariah's wife) didn't want to say her kids were "half-breeds". Well, doesn't look like that's quite true (at least that Zachariah was full blood), but we'll find that Cherokee connection!!

One researcher was told by an older relative "The Wilkerson family left MO for OK seeking to claim Indian land. They were denied possession because their family either had earlier left the tribe and given up their future tribal rights or they could not prove a sufficient percentage of Indian blood to qualify. He was not certain which applied.

Only recently discovered, thanks to Wilkerson researcher, descendant, and generous contributor, Dan Sadberry, we believe we have traced our James back to KY and VA. I'll copy Dan's research here:

However, the children listed here were taken from the Crawford County, MO census and do belong to our James and the "L" listed in his household. There is a marriage document listed from Crawford County between James Wilkerson and Louisa Bradley. Perhaps this is the "L"? BTW - there are connecting Wilkersons in Franklin Co. IL, so keep this in mind. Comments anyone?? JD)
